ENGLISH IMMERSION PROGRAMME IN CRIEC

A group of 23 students from the first year of ESO participated in an English immersion programme in Carboneras de Guadazaón, Cuenca from the 4th to the 7th of February.
Language immersion is basically a method developed to teach pupils a second language, in which the language being taught is used specifically for instruction purposes.

Unlike more traditional language teaching programmes, where the language is taught simply as a subject to be learned, language immersion focuses more on the second language being a tool which is used to immerse the student completely within the subject.
This short-term language immersion programme in Cuenca combines workshops with planned activities and just enough free time to have fun with students from other Secondary schools.
In the workshops the students are continuously exposed to the language. Any amount of time spent on them counts because it makes the students listen carefully to the rhythms, patterns, and nuances of the language and also encourages them to communicate with it.

PUMPKIN CARVING CONTEST WINNERS

It's one of the most popular holidays, second only to Christmas. While millions of people celebrate Halloween without knowing its origins and myths, the history and facts of Halloween make the holiday more fascinating.

Congratulations!

PUMPKIN DECORATING CONTEST

First and Second year students participated in a pumpkin contest.
Some people view Halloween as a time for fun, putting on costumes, trick-or-treating, and having theme parties. Others view it as a time of superstitions, ghosts, goblins and evil spirits that should be avoided at all costs.
Thank you very much indeed to all the participants.

HALLOWEEN PRESENTATION

Peter Wick, our English language assistant, delivered a very detailed whiteboard presentation to introduce the concept of Halloween to our younger students.
Presentations are a great way to have students practise all language systems areas (vocabulary, grammar, discourse and phonology) and skills (speaking, reading, writing and listening). Presenting is a skill that most people will need in the world of work. Students who are good presenters are better communicators all round, since they are able to structure and express their ideas clearly.
Overall, the effect of the Foreign Language assistants is multi-faceted. They build confidence in speaking foreign languages, a skill which many pupils find the most stressful of all. They also increase cultural awareness, giving both staff and students up-to-date knowledge of everyday life in their home country. Finally, foreign language assistants broaden the horizons of our pupils, showing them that a world exists outside of their own life, opening their minds and broadening their world views.

SCHOOL TRIP TO NEW JERSEY

From the 19th to the 27th of May, a group of students from the first year of Bachillerato participated in an amazing school exchange programme with American students from New Jersey. Our students were hosted by American families. They treated them as family members, involving them in activities, excursions and household chores. By staying with friendly host families, our students could improve their communicative skills, and at the same time know their culture as part of a totally immersive experience.
We would like to thank the American families and the students and staff from Pascack Valley and Pascack Hills High School for their hospitality.

Fearless Girl is a bronze sculpture by Kristen Visbal, depicting a girl facing the Charging Bull (or Wall Street Bull) statue. Fearless Girl is meant to "send a message" about workplace gender diversity and encourage companies to recruit women to their boards. The plaque below the statue states: "Know the power of women in leadership. SHE makes a difference"
